Ideas for your holiday at our French gite, La Germainiere
There are so many interesting places to visit in this lovely unspoilt part of Normandy including chateaux, cathedrals, markets and fascinating old towns. Here are a few of our favourite places to go. There are a lot more suggestions in the information book in the farmhouse too.
Villedieu des Poeles
This fascinating old town is famous for its copper ware and has a lively market on Tuesday and an interesting Bell Foundry.
Coutances
This town is world famous for its cathedral and has a street market on Thursday, lots of interesting shops and cafes and beautifully tended gardens floodlit in July and August.
Gavray
A local market town which has a lively calf market on a Wednesday which is fun for all the family. There are piglets, chickens and ducklings too, market stalls and the delicious smell of cooking sausages. There is a pannier market on Saturday and a good bar/restaurant with tables outside.
Granville
An interesting old port with harbour side restaurants and good shops. From here you can take a boat trip to the Isles of Chausey which are very pretty islands a few miles off the coast.
Normandy Landing Beaches
These are within easy reach with interesting museums at Arromanches and Caen.
Bayeux
Famous for its tapestry, Bayeux is a very pretty flower filled town with a beautiful cathedral.
Le Mont Saint Michel
This stunning Norman abbey church is built on a rocky tidal island and a very photogenic location to visit.
Zoo Champrepus
Situated between Villedieu-les-Poeles and Granville, the Zoo is an exotic park divided into different zones with additional areas such as a mini farm, themed gardens, exotic domestic animals and children’s play area.
Le Village Enchante
A family leisure park for all ages in Bellefontaine near Mortain. They have canopy walks and zip lines, train rides, dodgem cars, fairy tale woods and valleys, magic garden, theatre, paintball, pony rides and farm animals. There is also an onsite local brewery restaurant.
Local Shopping
There are many village fairs with Vide Grenier (empty your attic) sales. Click here to see our blog with more information.
